Dear Answers for Autism:
Thanks for the grant to get the iPads for our speech-language students on the autism spectrum. Here is what we’ve been doing at Greenfield-Central Schools.
Joanna Riemer, CCC/SLP
J.B. Stephens Elementary
and Greenfield Intermediate School
“My students and I are very excited to have the iPad as a new tool for working on speech and language during class. I am still learning about all of the things I can do and about all of the apps available for therapy with students with ASD. So far, my students have used it to work on articulation, vocabulary, figurative language and social language skills.”
Cathy Sturm, CCC/SLP
Weston Elementary and G-C High School
“Here’s a 3rd grader who loves working on the mad lib app. It has helped him to remember what a noun is, what an adjective modifies, and so on!”
Susie Steckler, CCC/SLP
J.B. Stephens Elementary and G-C Junior High
“I have used my iPad with most of my autism spectrum students. They absolutely love using it and are so motivated by the apps. I have used video apps for social language and apps for articulation, vocabulary, and cause and effect with my other students on the autism spectrum. I have used the iPad in both individual and group sessions. Some of my students have multiple disabilities that include autism and physical and/or cognitive disabilities.”
Liz Kuhn, CCC/SLP Eden Elementary and
Maxwell Intermediate School
“The thing I like best about using the iPad in speech therapy is that it appeals to all ability levels and interests. I can’t think of a better tool for an SLP in the past 30 years of my practice! Portability is a big plus and the availability of apps has opened many new windows for my students who are nonverbal.”
Shelley Finet, CCC/SLP
Harris Elementary and St. Michael’s.
“Thank you so much for your generosity that allowed us to acquire the iPad to use with the students on our caseload that have been identified with Autism. I have utilized it in a variety of ways with the children. It has been very exciting to see how this piece of technology has helped engage the students in ways that have previously been difficult to see. The apps have provided me with a glimpse of their personalities and that has been so
rewarding to see. The kids have truly loved having this as part of our speech therapy time.”
WE LOVE OUR IPADS!
